About the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, author of the Polyvagal Theory, the SSP is an evidence-based auditory intervention that uses filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve and promote physiological safety.
The SSP stimulates the vagus nerve, through filtered music, helping you to connect with yourself, others, and the world from a foundation of physiological safety.
Suitable for children and adults, the SSP has demonstrated benefits for individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences, and more.
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is safe, effective, and enjoyable for children and adolescents, and it’s shown to:
- decrease anxiety and trauma-related behaviours
- decrease auditory sensitivities
- enhance social engagement and participation
- improve emotional regulation
- increase resilience
- improve attention, concentration, and focus
- improve gut health and digestive-related issues
- promote a calmer emotional and physiological state
- improves long COVID symptoms
How is the Safe and Sound Protocol Administered?
The Safe and Sound Protocol is delivered via a phone app that plays specially filtered music through over-the-ear headphones.
While listening, you will engage in a relaxing non-verbal activity (colouring in, drawing etc….) and/or rest. As the purpose is to support feeling safe, have with you any “props” that will make your experience more comfortable (special blankets, etc.).
